John E. Jacobs

In 2019, American Legion Post 68 formally changed its name to “John E. Jacobs American Legion Post 68” to honor the only Leland resident killed during the Vietnam War.  Jacobs was killed by small arms fire while on patrol in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam on October 1, 1968.

At the time of his death, he was serving as an infantryman with

B Company, 1st Battalion, 1st Brigade, 5th Infantry Division.
