John E. Jacobs American Legion Post 68 supports the Oratorical Contest program by sponsoring and working with students from North Brunswick High School and the surrounding Leland, NC area.

The purpose of The American Legion’s National High School Oratorical Contest is to develop a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the Constitution of the United States on the part of high school students. Other objectives of the contest include the development of leadership qualities, the ability to think and speak clearly and intelligently, and the preparation for acceptance of the duties and responsibilities, the rights and privileges of American citizenship.

Post 68 sponsors an Oratorical Contest annually in January with students from Leland and the North Brunswick County area.  This keeps the possibility open for high school-aged students who go to private school but live in our area and for home-schooled students who meet the age and academic requirements.

Cash prizes are awarded for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place finishers. In addition, the winner of the Post 68 Oratorical Contest is eligible to compete in the District 9, Division II, Department of NC, and the National Oratorical contests.  Again, cash prizes are awarded to winners in recognition of their hard work.

Our current Post 68 coordinator of the Oratorical Contest is Dale Todd.
